Absolutely explosive Shanker Ricci reveal. So looking forward to Katya’s appearance. I loved Fiona’s too last time. Thank you. Makes me want to re read all the books just concentrating on Shanker. Then should I do the same for all the leading characters or would that be fruitless ( if hidden in plain sight). Thank you

Hi, Everybody! I love this!

If we draw a parallel between Shanker and Snape, it seems to me that the most important part of the Snape reveal was that it came after he apparently killed Dumbledore, the WORST thing Snape-haters would have expected. So to those who didn't pick up on it, having Snape revealed as an undercover agent was maximally surprising when Dumbledore survived.

Who, then, is the Dumbledore parallel, for Shanker to apparently kill and then ta-dah! bring back at just the crucial moment?

(Tempting tangent here on all the Shakespearean women who strategically faked death or went into hiding, for a big reveal later....)

If ROBIN is "Dumbledore", that fits with the theories that she will "die" or disappear in book 9. With all the Ricci content we've had recently, my current pet hypothesis is that she got snatched by a Ricci or someone working for the Riccis RIGHT OFF THE BOTTOM STEP. The phone call to Strike was made by the kidnapper with Robin's phone. But if Shanker is very deep under double cover, maybe that person is SHANKER. Robin trusts Shanker; she could be induced into a car and then overpowered or tricked. Maybe Strike will be made to believe that Shanker has kidnapped or harmed Robin, because of larger plot reasons that really ensure Robin's safety and the downfall of evil. I HOPE this is for Robin's safety...I don't want the full sacrificial Jesus-like death. I'm hoping for more of a Gandalf or Hermione from Much Ado About Nothing situation. Anyway...

Think of the readers' shock and sense of betrayal! Not SHANKER! Right Fiona? WE LOVE SHANKER!

Then, Strike would be the classical mythology-type hero who has to look for her in the "underworld". If the readership and Strike are forced to confront the spectacle of Robin's (apparent) death, that might invoke a title like Sleep tight, Evangeline. But then, continuing my favorite theory, on page 1001 or so--the very last page--we learn that Robin is alive. Revealing Robin's continuing good health simultaneously with his true nature as double-agent Good Guy John Ricci, will somehow bring all the bad guys down because it happens at just the right moment. I don't know, play along with me. I'm not a series author; how do I know the details? But literary alchemically? Robin would BE the gold.

How fun would that be? The wailing outcry to hurry book 9 would be as nothing to the wailing outcry for book 10, if that's what happened as a cliffhanger.

Of course, if STRIKE is Dumbledore, then we have the gender-switched Orpheus and Eurydice story, more like Isis and Osiris, wherein Robin must search high and low for HIM. Lots of mythological precedents for either gender searching for a lost loved one after a kidnapping and/or death. The suspense and the reveal would be just as intense. But Strike didn't walk offstage and make a phone call that wasn't answered.

Or! Or! Remember Oxenham and Maid of the Silver Sea? The man disappears while the woman clears his name after he was falsely accused. So that would be a satisfying narrative twist for book 9: Strike has to fake his own death--maybe with Shanker in the hotseat as the apparent murderer/fake-death facilitator--in order to hide while Robin conducts the investigation without him. This would be a great development in the arc of her career, which has featured increasing risk and independent action from book to book.

This last is a punctuation convention I would like to propose. We can quickly refer to variations on a name by using mathematical "absolute value" bracketing, to include not only a name but all the variation, to avoid a long list. I think we would all get it, right? Like we could say, "/John/" meaning "the absolute value of John" to avoid writing the list as has often been done, e.g., above. So we could type /Peter/ and mean anything from Simone through Rocco. Or /Lion/ and mean anything from Judah to Richard I. We wouldn't use it for specific names of individual characters, just when making projections about what type of names might crop up, or when referring to all the associated names at once.

Would that be too obscure? It won't hurt my feelings if this idea might confuse newcomers or people less obsessed with etymology, cryptonyms, etc. than I am.

Thank you, everybody.

PS I chose my fake last name to refer to the Aurochs.
